Pony deals with his grief over Johnny's death by pretending Johnny isn't dead, but Dally goes on an all-out suicide mission or at least this is how Pony sees it. Dally robs a grocery store, waves a probably unloaded gun at armed police officer, and goes down in blaze of gunfire. He was dead before he hit the ground. But I knew that was what he wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of the shots, even as I begged silently — Please not him […] I knew he would be dead because Dallas Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.
Pony's analysis seems right on. But why did Dally want to die? Couldn't he face life without Johnny? We can't answer that for sure, but we imagine that Dallas was overcome with guilt, and this guilt is probably what drove him to seek out the cops' bullets. Dally might have been thinking that if he hadn't helped Johnny and Pony hide out, then none of this would have happened. He might have figured that if he'd been there to protect Johnny in the park, Johnny wouldn't have killed Bob.
He might have been thinking that if he'd gone into the church to help Johnny and Pony, then perhaps they would've gotten out sooner, and Johnny wouldn't have been fatally injured by the burning timbers. He then later appears after Johnny killed Bob; he was at the club in the bedroom trying to get some sleep.
He gives the boys a gun and tells them to hop on a train to Windrixville and hide inside an old abandoned church. The church was almost inhospitable; however, it was far away [which helps them from being caught by the police, and it also had water for them to drink.
Later, Dally comes back a few days later after they been hiding and gives Ponyboy a note [from Sodapop,] and treats Ponyboy and Johnny to a fast food place, as the two were basically starving. When they return to the church, they find it on fire with seven trapped kids, inside. Ponyboy and Johnny help save the kids, and Dally later helps them; however, he hits Ponyboy hard enough to make him fall. We then later find out he did that because he was simply on fire. Afterwards, Ponyboy and Two-Bit visit Dally in the hospital because Dally had received a few minor burns due to the church fire.
Dally was maddened that he had to miss the rumble [fight against the Socs,] and tells them to "do it for Johnny," [to fight for Johnny]. He later convinces the nurse [with the aid Two-Bit's switchblade] to let him leave. Dally then joins the Greasers at the rumble [fight]. He matures over the course of the novel, eventually realizing the importance of strength in the face of class bias.

Two-Bit, whose real name is Keith, is a wisecracking greaser who regularly shoplifts. He prizes his sleek black-handled switchblade. He instigates the hostilities between the Socs and the greasers by flirting with Marcia, the girlfriend of a Soc. Steve is a seventeen-year-old greaser who works with Sodapop at the gas station. Steve knows everything about cars and specializes in stealing hubcaps.
