From her initial appearance at , Beloved has been described much like an infant. When Beloved was first sighted, even Sethe reacted as though it was the birthing of a baby with the breaking of her water.
After being taken in to , Beloved was examined by the current inhabitants. It was completely smooth with no wrinkles or skin defects present, even on her knuckles. This newness of skin and body is resonant with the newness and youth of an infant. He spends most of his time with Sethe, but he does not tell her anything about Beloved. The relationship with Beloved and Paul D are portrayed different here. I feel like Paul D is treating Beloved different because of her gender.

She says she came a long, long way. And nobody helped her. Paul D can't figure it out. If she came such a long way, why are her shoes brand new? Sethe warns Paul D to leave Beloved alone. She gets so angry that she tells him what she thinks of men…they're all intending to leave. Paul D disagrees. He's never done anything to hurt a woman.
Neither did Halle. Outraged, Sethe informs Paul D that Halle had indeed disappointed her. He left her. He never followed her when she ran away. Paul D pauses. Then he tells Sethe that Halle was in the barn when schoolteacher's two boys took her milk.
