Why do pinto beans have rocks

I've found stones and I've found poor sad moldy withered beans. No, I never have found a stone. Like Emeraldmaiden, I have found a few nasty looking beans. I have found the occasional tiny "rock" more like large grit in beans and lentils but nothing alarming though I am sure you could still chip a tooth on those. Originally Posted by Mooseketeer.

I have on occassion found a very small dry bean pinto and or a very small pebble. Considering the amount of beans harvested and the procedures that they go thru to clean them, I am not at all concerned as I do wash more than once and rinse in a collender.

Out here in the Southwest there are tons of beans cooked and consumed and no reports of dental problems Happy trails, HW. This reminds me The first time I made lentil soup, I had no idea what I was even supposed to be looking for when I "sorted" and "cleaned" the red lentils per the instructions on the bag - not exactly an easy task with red lentils.

I just sifted through the red lentils as best I could looking for? All I knew at the time was that I didn't find anything noteworthy and the soup turned out well. I've found one on occasion. Bring beans to a boil, then reduce heat to a low simmer. I recommend checking them at the 2 hour mark and giving them a taste. They should be tender and fully cooked through, but still a little firm and not mushy. Cook a little longer if they're not quite done. Remove from heat and use them in recipes like refried beans and charro beans , or let cool completely and store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Cooked beans will last about 1 week in the fridge. Nutrition Information Serving: 0. Author: Isabel Eats. Course: Side. Cuisine: Mexican. Leave a comment below and tag isabeleats on social media!

They came out perfect. Will garnish with grated cheese and tortillas. Those would most likely dissolve and get washed away when you rinsed the beans, but it demonstrates that stones can be in there. In Mexico I get stones all the time.

Thankfully they are normally not as hard my teeth so I havn't broken a tooth yet. I havn't had this occur in Canada only when buying them in Mexico. Almost every pack has atleast one if not more. Quite to the contrary - it is the modern agricultural technology that causes the stones.

Modern methods would mean of the past years and longer-combines have been used for many many years now. Hand harvesting would of course be picking beans right of the vine would not yield any stones. When I make pintos I find no less than stones. When I make field peas I don't find anything. What's the difference? Pintos are store bought. Field peas are home grown, hand processed.
